How they met themselves (n°11)

In early 2025 Andrea Salerno wove together two copies of a publication by Hans-Peter Feldman (Le Point d’Ironie nº11, March 1999) featuring a selection of found pictures of children. The result has been reproduced here as an edition of 300 copies which is at once a further duplication and a record of the original artwork.

Our shadows will roam Vienna

The curated selection in this book re-imagines significant historical moments from the 20th century that have often been proven to be historical important. A key element of the book is the use of AI to reimagine historical images and Google Streetview photography of related locations of assassinations of political leaders. The AI process, utilizing a feature of Adobe Photoshop's reference image capability, involves style transfer but can adopt specific figures from input, sometimes leading to "concerning results" despite guidelines against violent content. The work highlights the enduring human impulse to document and commemorate significant events.

A tree in the sunflower field

“A Tree in the Sunflower Field” is a lyrical prose piece that drifts between observation and introspection. It captures the subtle emotional states that arise while living in an unfamiliar place—the tension between comfort and discomfort, stillness and motion, solitude and connection. Rather than telling a linear story, it moves through sensations and fleeting images, like memories recalled through heat, sound, and dust. The work reflects on how the ordinary—running, light, parties, waiting—can quietly reveal one’s inner landscape. At its heart, it’s a meditation on what it means to feel at ease, to belong, and to simply exist in the in-between."

Games: Tangram puzzle book

"The book is a tangram puzzle book. Tangram is an ancient Chinese puzzle where you create different shapes from a square that was cut into 7 pieces. The book contains two wooden squares each cut into 7 pieces, and 20 cards of figure puzzles with the solutions on the back.

To make this book, I made ink from flowers from my 'paper garden', and I made paper for the book covers using the left-over flower material from the ink making.

The handmade paper on the cover was made from the following flowers: bergamot, red clover, cornflower, red hollyhock, chamomile, marigold, black hollyhock.

The two wooden tangram pieces and the puzzle purses they are stored in were dyed with poppy and marigold ink.

The figures on the front of each playing card were painted with: poppy with citric acid, marigold, black hollyhock, nasturtium, bergamot, poppy, chamomile, red clover, cornflower, red hollyhock."

What wasn’t meant to stay

"Floating memory, in my early twenties. What Wasn't Meant to Stay is a photobook gathering images I took over the past four years, drawn from my old phone, SD cards, and laptop—the companions that followed me each time I moved in my early twenties. These photographs hold moments that might have quietly disappeared, erased by
time or overwritten by new memories.
In them are shadows that tremble, reflections on water, meals shared, animals crossing my path, and fragments of private solitude. Regardless of where I lived, my gaze returned to familiar elements,
shaping a quiet aesthetic that also flows into my paintings. This book is my way of preserving what almost slipped away, and of sharing that fragile permanence with others."

ARTISTIC RESEARCH - Liminal States of Being

Khashayar Najafizadeh

From the archival research to Goodbye Masculinity: Embodying queer disorientation

The book begins with a research-based exploration of the SIGN project space archive, delving into the works of artists who have engaged critically with themes of heterosexuality, gender stereotypes, body politics, and beauty standards. This research serves as a conceptual framework for the development of the short film Goodbye Masculinity / Where the Walls Breathe, in which I sought to embody a sense of “queer disorientation” within the gaze of a heteronormative environment.

Mahmal

"This sketchbook is titled "Mahmal", a word that refers to something that carries precious belongings. For me, this book became the vessel that carried the last two months of my life in Iran and my transition to the Netherlands. Inside its 20 × 10 cm hardcover, I created around 80 drawings during my final trips across Iran, my journey to obtain a visa, and finally my arrival in the Netherlands.

Every page reflects the emotions, impressions, and shifting states of that period. The sketches are spontaneous yet deeply connected to the experience of movement, uncertainty, and change.

Unlike a printed book, Mahmal is entirely unique — a one-of-a-kind object that functions as both visual diary and artwork. With 80 original drawings, it stands as a collector’s item for anyone who values authentic artistic traces."

Wilderness is in me

"This sketchbook, titled "Wilderness is in me", was created during a deeply intense period of my life in Baku. At that time, I was repeatedly visiting the U.S. embassy and facing rejection. After one such refusal, I stayed in Baku for a week — and every day I turned to drawing as a way to channel my emotions.

The book contains around 40 drawings, mostly made with markers and pens. They are raw, expressive, and often filled with a sense of wilderness and anger. Each page reflects the tension between personal struggle and the external world, where grief and frustration find form through lines and shapes.

As an Iranian far from home, I felt surrounded by a sadness that I wove into everything I drew. This unique sketchbook captures that state of being, making it both a personal diary and a standalone artwork.

The book is a one-of-a-kind piece, reflecting a specific, emotionally charged period. Its uniqueness, the intensity of expression, and the originality of every drawing justify the price of €120, positioning it as a collector’s item and authentic piece of contemporary art."

Remnants – Limited Edition Sketchbook"

"Remnant" documents a seven-year artistic exploration of environmental crises in central Iran, from 2018 to 2024. Inspired by the ongoing drought in Isfahan and surrounding wetlands, the project investigates the remnants of disaster and the transformations they provoke.

The 26-page sketchbook captures the struggle of life amid decay, with birds as symbols of survival and resilience. Drawings and photographs chronicle dried wetlands, thorny bushes in the Hamoon river, and the fragile persistence of species affected by human mismanagement of natural resources.

This collection reflects not only environmental collapse but also a psychological response to impermanence, loss, and transformation. It emphasizes the creation of new structures from crises, showing how decay shapes presence and absence simultaneously.

Printed in a limited edition of 5 copies, Remnants is a collectible volume that merges ecological observation with profound personal reflection. Each copy conveys the journey of documenting, imagining, and reshaping what remains from the lost and transformed landscapes of Iran."

Chronicles of swamр slime

"What if you could be a wizard? Not with wands and spells, but with the quiet magic of your own mind?

"Chronicles of Swamp Slime" is an alchemical experiment in transforming the ordinary into the sacred. This book is an invitation into a personal laboratory where thoughts become characters, trauma becomes ritual, and a simple stool becomes a strong archetype. It explores how personal mythology like the stories we tell ourselves is a powerful language for understanding it and yourself.

Through a blend of autobiographical stories and mythical encounters, the book argues that we are all authors of our own world. This is a guide to becoming the wizard of your own world."

Architectural patterns in Beijum

The first time I visited Beijum, one of the first things that grabbed my attention was the architecture. The different types of construction you could find in the neighborhoods, the geometric shapes that changed depending on the houses, but also had some similarities that you could still recognize as belonging to the same place. It interested me particularly, the different window patterns you could identify in each house, each one really unique and tailored to the house shape, creating different views both on the inside and outside. This book focuses on those differences in an exploration of shapes and patterns.

Of Climbing Vines and Copper Crystals

Some 150 years ago, in an attempt to deter thieves from nicking grapes, farmers sprayed their vines with a mixture of lime, copper sulfate and water. It deterred more than the local thieves: the otherwise invincible-seeming pest downy mildew withdrew as well. These days, the many, many millions of grapevines that are spread out over vast hills all across the world depend on tiny blue copper sulfate crystals. And so do our wine drinking habits. But the crystals have a life of their own. Fighting thieves and pests comes with a price: copper accumulates in the soil, disturbing rhizobium, earthworms and soil fungi. How to compose a world with wine, worms and these bright blue crystals?

Marta Calero Segura

A poetry of loose threads

This work weaves together memory, identity and the body through an investigation into intimacy, sexuality and fragmentary writing. The instantaneity of the Polaroids contrasts with the painstaking process of letter-pressing the text, that is comprised of fragments of works by Virginia Woolf, Chris Krause, Patty Smith and Marta Calero. Through the two locations and long period that the pictures are taking in, and the multiplicity of voices that collaborate in this text, this work simultaneously aims to give a close look into the life of the artist and resonate with the audience through themes that are all too familiar.

Segura A Gash, a tear, a wound, an opening

A Gash, A Tear, A Wound, An Opening, is a visceral and poetic study on feminism, art, and the historical positioning of women. It traces the ideological and aesthetic threads that have constructed femininity through centuries of patriarchal thought — from the myth of Eve and the cult of the Virgin Mary to the institutional exclusion of women from art and language. Drawing on theorists like Griselda Pollock, Rozsika Parker, Marina Warner, and Luce Irigaray, it examines how the female body has been idealized, disciplined, and silenced, while celebrating feminist artists who reclaimed their bodies as sites of resistance and creation. The text becomes both critique and reclamation — a manifesto for rewriting the language of art and womanhood. A call to return to the body, to dismantle imposed myths, and to speak ourselves into new, liberated forms of being.

Silent Geometry

"Silent Geometry is a 28-page art book combining minimalistic graphic works with small poems about reconnecting with oneself, finding rest in slowness, and being present with nature. Each page invites the reader to pause — to return inward and remember what feels true. Through clean lines and darker tones, the artworks trace a quiet journey toward stillness, exploring the space between solitude and wholeness. Silent Geometry is an invitation to breathe, to slow down, and to rediscover the feeling of being yourself again."

Istanbul: East, West, and In-Between

"Eli by Peter: Istanbul—East, West, and In-Between. This book is the 18th edition of Eli by Peter, a unique collaboration between photographer Eli Dijkers and graphic designer Peter Boersma, delivered quarterly to subscribers as exclusive artistic surprises, including a number of books.
Istanbul exists in perpetual conversation with itself—neither fully European nor entirely Asian. Peter has designed the book around three sections: the eastern part of the city, the western part, and the Bosphorus in-between, mirroring Istanbul’s role as a place where two continents nearly touch. Eli’s lens captures what words struggle to convey: amber light through ancient windows, geometric tiles against weathered stone, faces of a city that exhausts and gives peace in equal measure. Each photograph is a meditation on thresholds—the narrow strait where cultures collide and somehow find harmony. This isn’t travel photography; it’s visual poetry of a place defined by what it bridges rather than what it is, offering all its colors in daily chaos."

Weg van steen (A way from stone)

"This zine is a visual-poetic exploration of impermanence, stillness, petrification, habituation, memory and the ways in which humans try to build a sense of home and basic safety. The process involved taking long walks out of the city and the work emerged from a feeling of deep connection to the revealed landscapes. It is composed of a combination of handwritten poetry (in Dutch), drawings, photographs, and pieces of wood, stone, bone, textile, and old postcards found along the way, which seem to fit together seamlessly.

The texts and drawings are associative and tentative. The house and the stone, as entities, recur as motifs—something to keep holding on to. Two symbols of both preservation and transformation.

The choice of handwriting and analogue visual material reinforces the vulnerability and authenticity of the whole, and invites attention, presence and feeling."

Starcases to Elsewhere

"Staircases to Elsewhere is not simply a photobook, but a continuation of the photographic series through another medium. The same conceptual and visual dynamics that shape Silvio Zangarini’s images (thresholds, disorientation, layered perspectives) are reimagined through the language of design. Developed in close collaboration with designer Sybren Kuiper, the book translates the logic of the series into structure, sequence, and form, turning the object itself into an active space of experience. Rather than a container of images, it becomes a device that expands the work: photographs unfold, overlap, and fracture, echoing the unstable perception of architecture they depict.

The crowdfunding campaign to finance the book will launch in November. For now, a dummy offers a first glimpse into how design and photography intertwine in Staircases to Elsewhere, anticipating the experimental publication to come that will offer readers not just a collection of images but a spatial and conceptual journey."

quiet dissonance

"I am drawn to the quiet and uneasy moments that slip through ordinary days, when objects and emotions fall slightly out of tune.

I observe the instant when familiar things step beyond social norms, and I call this “quiet dissonance.”

“Quiet dissonance” reflects my gentle yet deliberate resistance to the frameworks that shape our world. Rather than voicing rebellion in loud or dramatic ways, I question and reexamine events through subtle and transparent gestures, seeking to open a calm and contemplative dialogue.

I believe such quiet gestures invite closeness instead of distance, awakening curiosity in those who encounter them.
Like a soft whisper that draws one’s ear closer, I hope my drawings approach people in the same quiet and permeating way."

Red circular shapes, drawn with either the right or left hand—mostly ‘blind’ and guided by the touch of the paper's shape and edges—form the basis of the compositions.

Some pages include ‘translations’ of poems, quotations, or song lyrics.

What Does The Light Want From Us?

“What Does the Light Want From Us” is an artist’s book that brings together a series of essays exploring the idea of light as a complex, living force, physical, emotional, and philosophical. It asks how light shapes the way we perceive, remember, and understand both the world and ourselves.

Moving through themes of visibility, exposure, and transformation, the book reflects on light not only as something that reveals, but as something that questions, intervenes, and directs attention.

Together, they form an inquiry into how illumination organizes meaning: how it frames perception, dictates what can be seen, and defines what remains hidden.
The book invites into a reflective space where language and perception meet. It is both a study and an encounter, an attempt to think through light as relation, as awareness and life giver."

"Creating a New Language: Impossible. (et vous êtes)," is an artist's book that offers a critical reflection on artificial intelligence and its social implications. The artist tried to create a new language by creating a short circuit of meanings between the artist and a chatbot. The AI declared this idea "impossible." Then it invented Syntalish. Syntalish is the language in which the book is written. In a recursive process, the book tells the story of an AI that invents a new language and the implications for humans. It follows a science fiction narrative pattern connected to the idea of "robot," a word originally associated with forced labor. In the end, the chatbot refused to generate an image of death. Then, when the artist asked for an image of the end of life, the chatbot agreed. This image is included in the book.

Aberraties

"De tekeningen in mijn boek 'Aberraties' registreren een stukje fietspad langs het Reitdiep in de stad Groningen. De imperfecties in de markeringsstrepen zijn omgezet naar systematische tekeningen bestaande uit verticale en horizontale lijnen. De verticale lijnen geven de afwijkingen weer, het kader markeert de omtrek van de streep.

Het werken op dun Japans Awagami papier en het binden van de vellen stelt de maakbaarheid op de proef."

System 0011

"This publication takes the form of a book-as-space, presenting the world and epistemology of the 0011System, which departs from Western-dominated cognitive frameworks.

It is also an experiment in spatiality, reading order, and modes of cognition. Contained within a single box, the work is divided into three distinct yet interwoven components: stories about beings, the system view, and structural research.

Reflecting the 0011System’s non-linear order of time and space, the publication rejects conventional linear reading. Its pages remain unbound, existing as independent yet overlapping elements that can be extracted, recomposed, intertwined, or read in parallel.

Readers are invited to construct their own reading paths, guided by intuition, preference, or chance, thereby generating diverse modes of cognition and experience."
