Groningen Hopstad / Hop City
In Block C, a monumental floor installation made of fresh hop cones will be created. Residents of Groningen and the surrounding area will jointly adopt and care for 150 hop plants for this purpose. The fresh hop cones will be harvested in September and then brought together in a circular installation. In this way, the artwork will grow throughout the city over the coming months, giving rise to a temporary collective of hop growers. After the exhibition, the hop will be processed into, among other things, a locally brewed beer.

The first hop gathering on April 19, #aarden, organized by Lola Diaz Cantoni brought together 25 participants around a six-meter-long table. After an introduction to the work of herman de vries, they moved outside for paired conversations about their experiences with hop. The participants then prepared and shared an elaborate meal using vegetables, beans, and nuts they had brought themselves. A special moment was the tea ceremony led by Ilse Donker, during which participants tasted mindfully and learned more about the properties of hop and other plants.

Heel bijzonder! Bedankt aan iedereen die erbij was!

The second gathering, on Sunday, June 7, at the Paradijsvogeltuin in Groningen, began with soup, followed by introductions from each participant and an update on their hop plant. It was inspiring to see how the hop brings us together and how many stories are connected to it. We then moved to the flower garden for drawing and observation exercises: what happens when you look at a plant for a long time? What does it do to you? Can you draw what you see without looking at the paper? And what can you discover through this? We ended with a special tasting prepared by Ilse: the hop tea from our first gathering had fermented into a beer-like drink. Very special! Thank you to everyone who joined us!
From Hop Field to Artwork
On Monday, 14 September, around thirty participants brought their harvested hop cones to Block C for the harvest day. By now, the circle of hop cones has grown to an impressive three metres in diameter. Look closely and you will see how much the hop cones differ in colour, shape, size and structure. Together, all these different forms create a single whole. There is also a collection of booklets on display, which visitors are welcome to browse during the exhibition. They offer an insight into the growth process of the hop plants and the personal experiences of the participants. There is also a visual collection of portraits of the hop plants, some accompanied by portraits of their caretakers. The stories go beyond what can be seen. In an audio recording, participants share their experiences with their hop plants and with the project. In this way, the installation becomes more than a collection of hop cones: it is a gathering of plants, people, stories and experiences coming together in natural relations. During the opening on Saturday, 19 September, visitors had the opportunity to experience the result in this form for the first time.
