Al decennialang onderzoekt herman de vries hoe mens en natuur zich tot elkaar verhouden, waarbij natuur geen onderwerp is maar een gelijkwaardige aanwezigheid. Een vaak onzichtbare kern in zijn werk zijn mind moving plants: planten met geneeskrachtige en bewustzijnsveranderende eigenschappen, dragers van eeuwenoude kennis. Op 95-jarige leeftijd spreekt de kunstenaar de wens uit deze kennis niet te laten verdwijnen, maar over te dragen als levende praktijk.

For decades, herman de vries has explored the relationship between humans and nature, in which nature is not a subject but an equal presence. An often invisible core in his work is mind-moving plants: plants with medicinal and consciousness-altering properties, carriers of ancient knowledge. At the age of 95, the artist expresses the wish not to let this knowledge disappear, but to pass it on as a living practice.

ARTisBOOK en Block C geven hieraan vorm in een manifestatie die vertrekt vanuit natural relations (1982–1989), maar het perspectief verschuift van documentatie naar ervaring en overdracht. Via een zintuiglijke tentoonstelling, een uitgebreid publieksprogramma en een stadsbreed hop-project worden bezoekers en bewoners actief betrokken. Zo wordt kennis gedeeld door doen, zorg en collectieve ervaring, en groeit het werk letterlijk en figuurlijk de stad in.

ARTisBOOK and Block C give shape to this in a manifestation that departs from natural relations (1982–1989), while shifting the perspective from documentation to experience and transmission. Through a sensory exhibition, an extensive public program, and a citywide hop project, visitors and residents are actively involved. In this way, knowledge is shared through practice, care, and collective experience, allowing the work to grow into the city both literally and figuratively.
Groningen Hopstad / Groningen Hop City

In Block C komt een monumentale vloerinstallatie van verse hopbellen. Inwoners van Groningen en omgeving adopteren en verzorgen hiervoor samen 150 hopplanten. De verse hopbellen worden in september geoogst en komen dan samen in een cirkelvormige installatie. Zo groeit het kunstwerk in de komende maanden in de stad en ontstaat een tijdelijk collectief van hoptelers. De hop wordt na afloop van de tentoonstelling verwerkt tot o.a. een lokaal gebrouwen bier.

In Block C, a monumental floor installation made of fresh hop cones will be created. Residents of Groningen and the surrounding area will jointly adopt and care for 150 hop plants for this purpose. The fresh hop cones will be harvested in September and then brought together in a circular installation. In this way, the artwork will grow throughout the city over the coming months, giving rise to a temporary collective of hop growers. After the exhibition, the hop will be processed into, among other things, a locally brewed beer.
